Dave Barnes – Guitar and Vocals

I play guitar for Wild Oatz. I’ve been playing in bands since I was in high school 45-plus years ago. I’ve played in jazz, rock, bluegrass, country, and country-rock bands. I believe this is the sixth or seventh band I’ve been involved in. Some of the band names I’ve played with through high school and college were Wild Fire, Slim Pickin’s, Hybrid Grass, and Transit. The band I’d been with the longest (since 1980) is the Highway 61 Band with Scott’s brother Mike, which is how I met Scott many years ago.

My musical tastes and influences are all over the map. They range from Buddy Holly, Beatles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, to David Bromberg, Leo Kottke, Mark Knopfler, and Chet Atkins. I’d guess some of you are looking at a few of the above names, going – who the heck is that?

I admit I’m a gear junkie – I have 9 electric guitars, 5 acoustics, 2 banjos, 3 fiddles, 2 mandolins, 3 saxes (one electronic), a string bass, 6 amps, and numerous harmonicas, widgets, and gadgets. The instruments I use most with Wild Oatz are two Line 6 Variax JTV-59 & JTV-69S Modeling Guitars. The guitars are plugged into a Line 6 Helix effects and modeling unit. I was using a Quilter Tone Block 200 or Crown XLS1000 Amp through one or two Yorkville NX35 speakers, depending on the venue. In the past year, I switched over to the Line 6 PowerCab Plus. I like the sound and compactness of the rig I’m using.

I am also interested in computers and midi music. You can visit my website www.davidbmidi.com to hear the music I’ve sequenced. Being a techie, I also run and maintain this Wild Oatz Band Website.

It's been a joy playing with Megan, Jerry, Scott J, Scott S, and now Matt in Wild Oatz. I really enjoyed the studio process of recording the Wild Oatz CD in 2008, and am very pleased with the results of our hard work. I'm looking forward to our next recording project!
